An essential part of the modern way of life is the intensive use of electronics. Much of our daily tasks and commitments are related to the use of electrical appliances, which in turn increases the need for better and timely protection. The consumers in the electrical installation (electronic equipment, household appliances, etc.) are exposed to risks of overvoltage in the power supply network, as approximately 1/3 of the damages of the electronic components are due to overvoltages.
Surges are unpredictable and put at risk human lifes, properties and the functioning of businesses. Their main cause is lightning. Every year more than 8 million lightnings strike the ground, and in Bulgaria their approximate number is about 10 lightnings per square kilometer. This type of overvoltage can penetrate building installations through any type of conductive connection, even when there is no direct hit on the distribution network.
Cathodic arresters, also called arrestor protections, are a reliable protection of electrical equipment from overvoltages caused by lightning and transient peaks. They redirect excess current to their source or to ground and thus protect appliances from damage.
Depending on the size of the building, cathode arresters can be installed in the main panel, in the floor panel,or in the final switchboard.
Depending on the location of the panel in which it will be installed, the possible impact and the necessary protection, cathodic arresters are of several types
- Type 1 - at the entrance of the main panel (if there is a lightning rod in the building or at a distance of ≤50 m);
- Type 2 - at the entrance of each floor panel;
- Type 3 - near a sensitive load.
In large buildings, where there is sensitive equipment, it is necessary to install cathodic arresters of all 3 types, regardless of whether the buildings have a lightning rod.
